The School’s Out programmes, broadcast between 1600 and 1800, Monday to Friday, afford S4 to S6 students a unique opportunity on British Independent Local Commercial Radio to present their own radio programmes.

The programmes are designed specifically for a teenage audience, whilst giving presenters the opportunity for personal development and to acquire media skills. The service is looked upon favourably by prospective employers and by University selection panels, and can be regarded as community service for the three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Certain members have proceeded to follow successful careers in broadcasting. School students are currently being recruited for vacancies that will occur when their sixth year colleagues will leave school in the summer of 2012. Broadcasts can be conducted live from the stations based at Arbroath, Montrose, and Stracathro.

Training in music radio production consists of seven 2 hourly sessions, which include control desk operation, microphone technique, an appreciation of voice production, and programming techniques. Thereafter there are practice sessions during which the first programme is composed, which will be pre-recorded. The presenters proceed to programming which can be live or pre-recorded, depending on availability, in order to gain experience prior to transferring to present a School’s Out programme whenever the opportunity arises.

The commitment throughout is to present a programme once a week and schools are agreeable to allowing students to leave classes slightly early in order to conduct programming.

Contact should be made with Malcolm J B Finlayson, Managing Director, Radio North Angus Ltd, Rosemount Road, Arbroath, Angus DD11 2AT, e-mail: info@radionorthangus.co.uk.

We have recently been upgrading the Stracathro radio station to become a centre of radio communication for the people of North Angus, negating the present requirement to travel to Arbroath to participate in our broadcasts.

Over the past two years, we have reinstalled a transmitter at Stracathro, and extensively upgraded the studio and IT equipment from hospital radio to independent local radio requirements, the majority of the cost being borne by a grant from the Angus Council Community Grants Scheme. Separate telephone line and broadband facilities have recently been installed that allow for live programming to be relayed from Stracathro to the main transmission system in Arbroath, and subsequently broadcast on FM, DAB, and the internet. We have recently appealed in the Brechin Advertiser for volunteers specifically for the Stracathro station, and new members are currently being trained.

The final stage of the project involves soundproofing the two studios which currently suffer from echo which degrades quality broadcasting. Rather than purchase over expensive panels, we have opted to engage local contractors, namely Fitchet and Son, Arbroath, who proved competent in soundproofing our Arbroath studios in 2009. The soundproofing specification has been designed by a professional broadcast/sound engineer. Half of the project cost is being met from a generous donation from the League of Friends of Stracathro Hospital. In conjunction with J&M Interiors, suspended ceiling specialists, Dundee, and the NHS Estates Department, Fitchet and Son expect to complete the work by 9 December.

RNA is grateful to the League of Friends for sharing the cost, the contractors, and also the Estates Department for assistance.

Radio North Angus is hoping to recruit new volunteers for the radio station based at Stracathro that been extensively upgraded, with further improvements planned.

It is intended to connect the Stracathro station to Arbroath via broadband, thereby enhancing the live programming across the network.

A survey conducted recently indicated that almost half of the population of the transmission area listen to RNA which has one of the highest levels of localised live programming in the UK. The music
output includes a variety of genres from chart to nostalgia and classical.

Volunteers are required for general and specialist music programming at various time of the day, and involvement averages at three hours per week, at a time that is mutually agreeable. Whilst live programming is preferred, recording can take place at the radio station to suit individual requirements. Prospective presenters with no previous public performance experience should not be deterred from applying, as full training is given, with plenty of opportunity for practicing prior to programming.

Current presenters, who range in age from mid teens to mid 80s, and include professionals, housewives, retired, disabled, and unemployed persons, gain much enjoyment from music programme
presentation, and from being part of an organisation dedicated to assisting individuals and organisations across Angus.

It is considered that the vacancies may be of particular interest to those who have time on their hands during the day for an interesting pastime, or who wish to make broadcasting a profession. A number of previous presenters have gained career positions in the broadcasting industry.

Radio North Angus is also seeking volunteers to assist with fund-raising activities on the basis of three or four hours, two or three times a year. Such activities would involve assisting with events such as
collections or coffee mornings. There are also vacancies for assisting at the Stracathro station on a weekly basis.

Prospective volunteers are invited to contact the Managing Director.

Brechin had a distinct Christmas atmosphere on the day, with an indoor market being held during the morning at the Mechanics Institute, followed by a seasonal coffee and cake afternoon within the Gardiner Memorial Church Hall in the afternoon.
Members of the Brechin Christmas Lights Committee, the Brechin and District Round Table, and Christmas goods and fare stallholders, braved sub-zero temperatures to establish and provide a carnival atmosphere in St Ninian’s Square, from early afternoon, in a picturesque snowy setting.
RNA promoted the day for two weeks by continuous mentions on air, and provided music from 4.00pm.
The Brechin and District Pipe Band made a welcome appearance at 6.00pm to lead into the ceremony at 6.30pm.
The 2010 Pageant Princess and her assistants were in attendance, with the Princess, Catriona, conducting the count down to the Christmas lights switch-on at 6.30pm.
RNA continued to play seasonal music and conduct commentary whilst Santa appeared magically from the Library and then met with the children present.

Radio North Angus is delighted to receive a donation of £250.00 from the Arbroath and District Round Table towards the cost of equipment for studio 2 of the Arbroath Radio Station.

It is intended to purchase two MP3/SD Sound Card/CD players which will enhance the facilities by providing state-of-the-art technology that presently exists in studio 1.
This will provide an equity of facilities between the two studios with distinct advantages.
Currently, studio 1 acts as the main studio for live broadcasting, whilst studio 2 is used as back up and for training, recording and practicing.
The players will facilitate the broadcast workload being split between both studios.
The funds were raised by means of a highly successful Barnfest held at Mains of Carmyllie Farm in August, and RNA is one of the many local organisations who have benefitted from the generosity of the Arbroath and District Round Table.

The support and generosity of the Arbroath Tablers is appreciated.
